So my oil pressure gauge was reading incorrectly. GM and their shit stepper motors, I swear. I also had a chunk of my clear plastic cover broken off. So off to the junk yard to get a cluster I can steal parts off.

$20 later I have a clean cluster out of a blue Jimmy Diamond Edition (hrrrnnnnggg I need those seats and door panels) with 211,xxx miles on it as we found out when we plugged it into my truck.

Kinja'd!!!

Like this but lightly T-Boned on the driver’s side

Taking it apart was pretty straightforward save the actual gauge face piece that is partially glued onto the white plastic it sits against. Gentle screwdriver prying got that done. Get the stepper out of it, put on in my cluster, plug it in, no difference except everything is in the wrong place on their respective gauges. Fix everything and the oil pressure still reads zero. Try two more, still nothing. Put old one back in the correct way, will move up and down but doesn’t read high enough to turn off check gauges light.

At this rate we’re thinking the previous owners who claim to have put in a new pressure sensor didn’t, did it wrong, or the oil pump is weak. I’m hoping its not the oil pump because that isn’t a fun job. I don’t think it is because by now I feel I would’ve had issues if it was. Eventually we’ll pull the sender out and see what’s up.

On the bright side, I have not as faded needles and a not broken clear cover now, so yay?

Did you get the seats?

Upon further inspection the driver's seat was pretty messed up, so no.

My oil pressure gauge just swings wildly all over the place. Sometimes it’ll work for a few seconds but then it’s back to having spasms. I thought maybe there was a switch I could replace or even a sending unit but nope, it’s the cluster. Excuse me while I don’t mess with that! Sounds like a lot of brittle 21-year-old GM plastic waiting to break.

That jimmy looks like an Expedition at first.

Oh, that loks like fun!

I used to drive some fleet Silverados with those wonky gauges. The company didn’t feel like fixing them, and I always wondered how that conversation would go if I ever got pulled over.

“Do you know how fast you were going?”

“About 130?”

Yeah your cluster just does that, I imagine it’s the exact same one that the Safari has (plus a tach) and the oil pressure gauge just sorta jiggle back and forth like it isn’t attached to anything.

Mine were easy compared to my dad’s ‘04 Silverado. His are soldered in place while mine just push into the board.

The casing just all clips together really. As long as you're gentle it isn't bad.

The odometer in my Mustang stopped working recently. That’s an easy fix too (once you pull the cluster). Just gotta replace a couple of little plastic gears. No need to even pull any needles off.

Getting the cluster out of my truck is actually the easy part. The whole face bezel of the dash around the cluster and radio/HVAC is held on with three bolts and some clips. 4 bolts on each corner of the cluster and its out. I can do it in 5 minutes at this point.
